Free Women
In the face of many obstacles, we meet a courageous group of women who have organized to change their world.
Throughout India, women are forming 'self-help groups' (SHGs) to combat the many issues facing them. With the great help of Vani Chenguttuwan, we spoke at length with the SHG in Kalugumalai, in the state of Tamil Nadu, about their successes.
Many of these women's organizational successes came after intensive work with the DHAN Foundation and its Kalanjiam Community Banking program ('Wealth' in the Tamil language).
These organizations provided on-the-ground support for the women, micro-finance for small-business start-ups, and extensive education in crafts production and marketing - traditional skills enhanced by good business practices.

Thomas Greco Explains the Debt-Basis of Modern Money - #Commons Education Series A
Banks create money by making loans. Author and money expert Thomas Greco uses simple analogies to explain how this process works. He also explains how Direct Credit Clearing offers a simple, legal, and effective means for eliminating the need for bank-derived debt using the 'credit commons' approach.
Greco explains how the debt-based money system (within which we unconsciously operate) creates an inevitable cycle of boom-and-bust, because interest payments on debt, in aggregate, inevitably outstrip the value of goods and services.
The resulting urgency to repay debt creates some of the catastrophes of our time: unsustainable usage of resources, overharvesting trees, mining to much, too fast, building houses too often - all to pay-off not only legitimate costs, but also illegitimate bank fees that do nothing productive in the economy.
Vandana Shiva: To Feed Ourselves, First Feed Other Species - #Commons
Dr. Vandana Shiva, a physicist and powerful leader in the worldwide, growing movement towards organic food, describes her vision for the diverse, healthy ecosystems that once sustained, can provide ample food for humanity. Part of her experience is the nearly 5,000 years of agriculture in India - one of the longest, and perhaps an example for other places seeking a sustainable future.
In a stunning critique, she describes her research demonstrating that organic, diverse food-ecosystems provide far more food, better quality food, better ecosystems/habitat, and more profitability for organic farmers. From the interview:
Rogpa - Happy Kids and Fair Trade
The Rogpa Charitable Trust in Dharamsala, India, started providing daycare for Tibetan kids - mostly from refugee families - but its mission has steadily grown to providing job training for refugees, and business creation for sustainable livelihoods.
Now, Rogpa has started a Cafe to serve great pastries, sweets, coffee - and to sell the Fair Trade goods they make, and that others bring to the store. All of this is done with a Fair Trade model - a very exciting looks at a new kind of business.
Street Kids of Old Delhi
These street kids ran up to us.
They were great, and hungry and also being kids. At first, they faked some crying, then they were mostly curious....and some were supposed to be in school - at 11:00am Monday. They all had energy, they were all great...they also had a 'handler' woman telling them what to do... See how it turned out.

Trash Beach
From toys, to shampoo bottles, to bread wrappers, to car parts, to our shoes and clothes, plastic is everywhere!
But what happens to all that plastic when we are done with it? Where does it end up? People have said that 90% of plastic ever produced is still around today. See the unexpected place Pierre has found our plastic leftovers.
Across the Pacific Ocean and the other great oceans of the world, we find huge piles of garbage collecting along the shorelines - and at the centers of huge ocean currents as they circulate.
Many animals are killed by this trash, this garbage of rope and nets and bottles and shoes - all the stuff we forget, that washes out to sea.
Pierrre and Krista find these on the South Point of the Big Island of Hawai'i.
